Scuba Diving In The Maldive Islands

Once during one of the sking trips, we got stuck in a blizzard on a chair lift. Once we managed to get off the lift somebody suggested that we go somewhere warm next. This was the result. Learning to scuba dive in two weeks in the Maldives.
This is the island on which we stayed - Meerufenfushi (translated as "sweet water island" I think). It is your typical desert island, where the local saying is "no shoes and no news".

The dive school is run by Euro Divers. Dive theory was taught in the early evenings in the grass hut classroom. Practical lessons were taken in the Indian Ocean. It certainly beats learning to dive in the UK in a cold gravel pit or the Irish Sea.

We sailed to the various dive locations in one of the local boats (dhoni's if I remember correctly). After kitting up and checking the air, the best way in is backwards over the side.

We hired an underwater camera for a couple of days and even though it was a little difficult to operate the results came out okay. The trouble was each time we had the camera the sharks and rays stayed away. Talk about the one that got away.
